People I look up to

My Mother

Invictus

OUT of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance 5
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade, 10
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate: 15
I am the captain of my soul.

Mother Teresa (1910 - 1997)

"If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one."
"It's not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving."
"The most terrible poverty is loneliness and the feeling of being unloved."
"Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless."
"What we do is less than a drop in the ocean. But if it were missing, the ocean would lack something."
"If you try, you will find it impossible to do one great thing. You can only do many small things with great love."

Poetry: The music of the soul

The Gestalt Prayer

I do my thing
and you do your thing.
I am not in this world
to live up to your expectations
And you are not in this world
to live up to mine.

You are you and I am I.
And if by chance
we find each other, it's beautiful,
If not, it can't be helped.
(and it was not meant to be!)

Fritz Perls (1893-1970)

Sometimes

Sometimes things don't go, after all,
from bad to worse.
Some years muscatel faces down frost; green
thrives; the crops don't fail, sometimes
a man aims high, and all goes well.

A people sometimes will step back from

war; elect an honest man; decide they
care enough, that they can't leave some
stranger poor. Some men become what
they are born for.

Sometimes our best efforts do not go
amiss; sometimes we do as we meant to.
The sun will sometimes melt a field of
sorrow that seemed hard frozen: may it
happen to you.

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
image

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

image

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

image

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

image

Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams; it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful.

image
Strive to be happy.

--- Max Ehrmann, 1927

"People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered; Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, People may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; Succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, People may cheat you; Be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; Build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, They may be jealous; Be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you've got anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; It was never between you and them anyway." - Mother Teresa

They say you can't go home again, so I guess that is perhaps the reason JKR threatened to kill off Harry; why Lara Croft may never look like Angelina again and perhaps why Fox committed suicide. We don't want to be type cast or pigeonholed and after a significant amount of time has transpired we simply...
